These classroom rules and policies are in place not to restrict you, but to help you get along with your peers as you learn together through this course. Please remember to keep this in mind as you interact with your fellow students.
There is only one rule that I expect out of high school students in a professional learning environment.
1) Respect not only others, but yourself and the learning environment.
I expect each individual student in the classroom to conduct him or herself accordingly by treating everyone with the respect that they deserve. This applies not only to your peers, but to yourself as well. Every student is expected to follow directions given in class and comply accordingly refraining from any disrupting activities.
Consequences for not adhering to this rule may result in detention and a parent or guardian contacted for the student's misdemeanor. A verbal warning will be given for the first offense, but if the student continues to disrespect these rules, he or she will be penalized.

Essays:
Essays will take up a majority of the grade in this class. All essays will be take home essays where students will be graded on a rough draft and then a final draft afterwards. There will be peer review sessions in class for all the essays we write so that the students improve their writing skills. It may be difficult to get started with an essay at first. If that's the case, watch this video below that will help you form a strong introduction paragraph.

Tests:
All tests will be taken in class. There will be two midterms and one final in total for the entire school year. There will be a review session the day before the test about the novels read so that students will get as much preparation as possible.
Quizzes:
All quizzes will be online focusing on the content of the books we will be reading. Because these are online quizzes that are available from the beginning of the school year, there will be no excuses for any missed quizzes. Quizzes that are not taken before the indicated deadline will be marked down with a 0.
Absences:
If a student is absent, it is his or her responsibility to get missed assignments and notes. If a student is absent on a day an assignment is due, he or she will be penalized on the severity of the tardiness. Any absent work that is not turned in will automatically receive a 0. If the student knows he or she will be absent ahead of time, please inform me so I can make the appropriate accommodations. If a student does not contact me about an absence ahead of time for a test day, they will automatically receive a 0 on that examination.
Extra Credit Opportunities:
There will be extra credit opportunities offered to students who come in prior to the assignment due date to get their essays checked by the teacher. There will be no more extra credit offered unless I feel as if the class as a whole is struggling and requires a bit of extra help.
